HTC is making a move in graphics by aquiring S3 Graphics from chip-maker VIA for $300 million. S3 makes graphics solutions for desktop and notebook computers as well as embedded products. You probably haven’t heard of S3 being compared to the big boys of graphics like NVIDIA or AMD/ATI but they do have experience making low power solutions that support 3D graphics and HD video playback.  If you’re wondering which HTC devices this merger could be playing to, its definitely the tablet and smartphone ecosystem.

The deal has been approved by the boards of directors at VIA, WTI, and HTC, but still needs regulatory approval. VIA says the sale could be complete by the end of the year which means we won’t be seeing anything produced from this merger until 2012 at the earliest.
