If you want developers to build apps that run seamlessly on your device, you give them the code. So its not surprising that ASUS has released the kernel source code for the Eee Pad Transformer Android tablet. It is an expected move since it uses open source technology that’s licensed using the GNU General Public License which requires anyone using the software to make the relevant source code available. But what has us sitting up and paying attention is that this is the source code for an Android 3.0 tablet and Google hasn’t released the source for Honeycomb to the public.

Brad over at Liliputing points out that Asus hasn’t released the code for the entire operating system, but rather just for the Linux kernel. The full version of Android combines a Linux kernel with a Dalvik virtual machine which runs Java-based apps.

If there was any development community getting ready to surround this tablet/netbook hybrid then they’ll be pleased to know that they can begin hammering away at things before the device is in their hands.

If you’re keen to get coding visit the ASUS product page for the download.
