In the turbulent wake of Apple’s iPad announcement we’ve been seeing lots of other tablet devices given the once over, since it’s become clear the iPad won’t be all things to all men as Apple envisaged.
The latest contender, and quite a heavyweight at that, comes from none other than The Chromium Project, the open-source base for Google’s Chrome OS. At first glance it’s easy to dismiss a couple of low-details renders of a generic slate device, but these were put together by Glen Murphy, who just happens to be the UI lead for Chrome OS. The hardware in the shots is obviously just placeholder until they reveal me real hardware, but the software renders are interesting, especially the split-keyboard for thumb-typing seen above (something like that could almost make a large tablet usable for extended periods of typing).
There’s also a video of a touchscreen UI mockup -
These images and video make it obvious that Chrome OS is heading to tablets, but given that Android has been around on tablets for a long time, will this be perceived as Google encroaching on Apple’s market, or did Apple already encroach on Google’s?
