Things are changing at our favourite Intel devision the Ultra Mobility Group as Anand Chandrasekher SVP & GM is leaving Intel to pursue other interests. The company did not provide any additional explanation.

In a brief email message to WSJ, Chandrasekher said there is not much to add beyond the announcement. “I have done what I wanted at Intel and I felt it was time to explore other opportunities,” he said.

Two vice presidents from the Intel Architecture Group, Mike Bell and Dave Whalen, would jointly take Chandrasekher’s place effective immediately. Taking a close look at who is going to be heading up the UMG Mike Bell is actually former Palm & Apple and has only been at Intel since July 2010. Dave Whalen joined Intel in November of 2010 and is ex Palm and prior was at various wireless technology and product companies like Carrier Access, Openwave Systems, Kyocera Wireless, Sony Wireless Telecom and Los Angeles Cellular Telephone Company.

Intel Architecture Group head David Perlmutter stated that “We continue make the investments needed to ensure that the best user experience on smartphones and handhelds runs on Intel Architecture, and to ship a phone this year,”. If this was a forced exit then it would indicate that Intel is taking its commitment seriously and is dissatisfied with its inability to beat chipsets designed on ARM architecture to market with a show stopping smartphone chipset.
