IDF Beijing is around the corner starting on April 12th and we’ll be there to cover all the action! The session details of the conference have revealed that the new generation of the Atom processor is going to be unveiled. Its going to be a session that we in mobile computing keep a close eye on since AMD’s Fusion CPUs have made graphics performance an area that Intel is going to have to address.

Here’s the detail from the session catalogue:
Designing a New Generation of Netbooks with the Intel® Atom™ Processor Based Platform
This session will introduce a new set of platform features and innovations that will allow HW manufacturers and developers the opportunity to build the next generation of exciting netbook designs that will delight the consumer. In addition, attendees will get first looks at the next generation Intel® Atom™ processor based platform.
Topics covered in this session:
• Platform capabilities enabled by Intel® WiFi solutions that deliver new netbook usage models
• Features and benefits overview of the next generation Intel Atom processor based platform
• Thermal solutions for cool and quiet fanless netbook designs
• Exciting demonstrations

IDF is going to be an interesting show as we’re also going to be seeing a number of Intel devices running Android. Chippy over at UMPCPortal has given some analysis of Cedar Trail, which I have to agree with. IDF Beijing is shaping up to be a big show, actually it better be, this is not the year to be conservative as the competition that AMD is brining to the market can not be ignored.

Will Intel supply the baby spoons and bibs? They like to treat the consumers like babies when it comes to moving Atom forward. Like babies, we can’t have too much because we are babies and need to be spoon fed small portions.

AMD wins in graphics performance still which get’s increasingly important even for browsing and OS operation. Not to mention these weird resolution restrictions for external monitors with the GMA 3150.

What gets me excited for Intel though: “Thermal solutions for cool and quiet fanless netbook designs”. It still needs proper (30+fps 720p) flash video playback and full hdmi (or at least 1680×1050 via VGA) support to get me anywhere near buying another netbook.

With Tegra plattforms delivering high battery life and fanlessness together with gaming, they can only hope that Windows 8 takes some time to come up, otherwise they’ll lose their advantage on full productivity applications.
