Update 2: Another update on Cedar Trail from Fudzilla. First, the higher end SKU with a 6.5W TDP will require a fan. The lower SKU with a 3.5W can run fanless as we’ve heard before. Information on pricing – they’ll be about half the cost of current dual core Pinetrail Atom processors (N570 and N550) which go for about $86. The lower end model will sell for $42, the higher end for $47. Pricing is even cheaper than aging single core processors – Fudzilla says the Atom N450 / N455 sell for $64 in bulk.
Update: Fudzilla has heard of two SKUs for the new Intel Cedar Trail platform. Both dual core and using the same NM10 chipset as the last generation (as we’ve heard before). The first one has a TDP of 3.5W, the second one with a 6.5W TDP but clocked higher.
Chippy over at UMPCPortal has done a little digging and found that the next generation Intel Atom processor, Cedar Trail, will be one topic of discussion at IDF Beijing which happens on April 12 – 13. Here’s a portion that details one of these talks at the event:
Designing a New Generation of Netbooks with the Intel® Atom™ Processor Based Platform
This session will introduce a new set of platform features and innovations that will allow HW manufacturers and developers the opportunity to build the next generation of exciting netbook designs that will delight the consumer. In addition, attendees will get first looks at the next generation Intel® Atom™ processor based platform.
Topics covered in this session:
• Platform capabilities enabled by Intel® WiFi solutions that deliver new netbook usage models
• Features and benefits overview of the next generation Intel Atom processor based platform
• Thermal solutions for cool and quiet fanless netbook designs
• Exciting demonstrations
Now with AMD Fusion actually being a worthy netbook platform (Atom Pine Trail can’t compete when it comes to multimedia, gaming and graphics) and posing a threat to Intel’s netbook market share, they’ve got to do a little more here than just lower the TDP this time around – 5W is the rumored target and with barely any speed bump. We can see mentioned above that there’s promise of a fanless netbook solution this time around, and also a hint at WiDi 2.0 for streaming wireless audio / 1080p video. Other goodies we’ve heard coming to Cedar Trail in the past include HDMI and DisplayPort out, HD video playback (hardware accelerated).
