Last week Sony introduced the Vaio W Eco Edition an updated version of its Vaio W netbook line. This new model boasts Intel’s Atom N450 processors, GMA 3150 graphics and eco-friendly features including a plastic case made partially from recycled CDs.
Sony’s newest Netbook are described in the the FCC documents as a 10.1 inch display and a 1.66GHz Intel Atom Pineview N450 processor. The laptop has a 4400mAh battery and 802.11b/g/n WiFi and Bluetooth. It will be available with 1GB to 2GB of memory and a 250GB or 320GB hard drive.
Since we only have these 2nd drawings to analyse we can see that Sony has learned its lesson. The original Vaio W only came with a 3 cell battery only later did we see the option for 6 cell, which stuck out quite a bit. On this latest offering the battery seems to take up more space than the batteries on previous Sony Vaio W models. So it’s possible that the battery on this netbook won’t jut out as much as the 6 cell battery on existing Sony Vaio W laptops. Here is a photo of the 6 cell battery on a Vaio W, Sony is slowly learning that a netbook is a MOBILE computing device and 2.5 hours of battery life just won’t cut it.
We’ll keep an eye out for this one and hope that Sony will catch up with the rest of the netbook market that has a firm grasp on users needs.
On a side note, to add a bit of controversy to the table about whether this is a Vaio or not. Peter from netbooked has pointed out that this isn’t a Vaio, which has already been upgraded to the N450 with their Eco model. And the battery looks a little different as well, so this is in fact some type of new model. But then again, it might just be a reworking to compensate for how ridiculous the 6 cell battery looks below. We’lll just have to wait and see!
