Over at CES in Vegas MIPS Technologies has issued a press release announcing it’s bringing to market the world’s first Netbook powered from the ground up by open-source software, the Yeelong8098. Everything from the BIOS through the kernel, drivers and up to the Android OS is completely free and waiting to be tinkered with.
The company is touting the new model as being particularly hacker-friendly due to it’s open-source roots and relatively simple internals. Specifically, an 800Mhz Longsoon processor, 8.9″ 1024 x 600 display, 500MB or 1GB of DDR2 RAM, your choice of a 2GB or 8GB SSD, or a 160MB standard HDD, and a card reader. The 8098 also sports an internal USB port for expansion (Hello, 3G adaptor), and you can opt to have a Webcam and USB Wifi adapter included.
