Figuring out what technology is going to be used in the classroom is a question that we’ve been asking for a while. Its not only cost of adoption but its getting the teachers to change their ways and integrate new tools into their existing educational structure. Webb School, as Private a school in Knoxville Tennessee is breaking ground in wireless education with all students from grade four to 12 are required to carry iPads starting in August. The parents have the option of buying their kids an iPad or leasing the Wifi only model for $20 a month.

Webb School is viewing the tablet as a textbook replacement as well as an interactive learning tool. The question is how many textbooks are available for the iPad? If not textbooks educational apps, there are few granted but they usually what I would expect a school to be using, maybe as a supplementary aid at home. What we hope the kids don’t learn is to pass data through closed channels and accept the proprietary nature of Apple relationship with the web.
