There wasn’t as many 7 inch tablets at CES as we had originally expected, so we were pleasantly surprised when the guys at intoMobile got a hands on with the 7 inch ACER Android Tablet. It will be running the next-generation Qualcomm Snapdragon dual-core processor clocked at an impressive 1.2 GHz and capable of “asynchronous clocking”. It will launch with Android 2.3 and hopefully the upgrade to Android 3.0 Honeycomb will happen in March when we are expecting it to launch. Unfortunately they didn’t get anytime to play with the ACER UI 4.5 which if lives up to the hype paired up with some sweet hardware is a solid device.

The tablet even thought its not an iPad does have something in common as it only has a single home touch sensitive button rather then the standard Android home, back, menu & search. From what we understand this is a move that is setting up the tablet for Honeycomb since Android 3.0 won’t need navigation buttons.

There were no specific dates regarding the release dates apart from later this year, we also didn’t hear a peep about price. What we do know is that this 7 inch display will have 1280 x 800 WXGA resolution and support Adobe Flash 10.1 Player and is also sporting the Adreno 220 GPU. There’s a rear-facing camera with LED flash, with a front-facing camera for video calls.

As for the hardware, it’s good stuff. The tablet feels like a premium product, with sturdy construction and enough heft to help convince you that this is a high-end device. Sure, it might just be our brains tricking us into believing that something with a solid, dense in-hand feel is something that is more expensive, but we’re not complaining here. Unfortunately, the shiny, metallic-looking plastic trim doesn’t really stand up to the “is it metal?” sniff test. The backside of the tablet, though, redeems itself from the disappointment of the plastic trim pieces. It has a grippy surface that’s also clean and sleek.
