Aiming to close the digital divide, Cherrypal has launched what it calls the “Africa”, a $99 Netbook sporting a 7″ screen, 400Mhz ARM processor, 256Mb of RAM and a princely 2Gb of Flash memory, which can run Windows CE or Linux. The device is clearly aimed at developing nations, although Cherrypal do state that you’ll enjoy it “whether you live in Ghana or Texas”.
Referring to the disparity between computing equipment in the west vs the developing world, Cherrypal’s Max Seybold said “We’re constantly looking for ways to bridge that gap, and the Cherrypal Africa is a huge step in the right direction. Plus, everyone who has tried it has absolutely loved it!”.
The Africa provides quite a big spec bump over the MenQ model we saw at yesterday at the Netbook World Summit, while only costing $19 more, and is a perfect example of what can be achieved with falling component prices, and it certainly makes you wonder how low the price could be pushed if a big player like Dell were to enter the market.
