If you thought Atom wasn’t a series that Intel was investing into then you’ll be shocked to learn that Stellarton, which was announced at IDF in September is now the E600C Series. What makes this evolution of Atom different is its focused on the embedded market and is configurable as it includes an Altera Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). This feature allows for a wider range of task-specific chips brought to market faster without having to perform extensive hardware changes. The new Atom can accommodate a range of standard and user-defined I/O interfaces, high-speed connections, memory interfaces and special hardware acceleration.

If you are wondering who might be attracted to the new evolution of Atom, it can be custom tailored for industrial machines, portable medical equipment, communications gear, vision system, VoIP devices, high-performance programmable logic controllers and embedded computers.

Embedded computing solutions maker Kontron already has E600C-based prototype boards, with production scheduled for the second quarter of 2011. Bulk quantity prices range from $61 to $106. The E665CT, E645CT, E665C and E645C will arrive within two months, while the E625CT and E625C ship in the first quarter of 2011.
