Ubuntu 10.10 has just been officially released today. I’ve been using both the Desktop and Netbook versions for about a week now and I’m extremely impressed with how far along the desktop version has come since I last used it full-time (5 years ago). I can’t say the same for the Netbook Edition which comes with the new Unity interface. It’s slower overall compared to the previous version and other Linux distros and the interface is a little awkward.

I appreciate that it’s the first Ubuntu netbook version to recognize my Wi-Fi card in my old Samsung N140 netbook out of the box but it works less than half the time. Boot up and shut down are extremely quick. I will stick to the Desktop version on my netbook alongside Jolicloud. If you haven’t already check out OMG! Ubuntu for some Ubuntu 10.10 starter tips.

A have (hate) to agree. Have just scrapped 09.10 on my acer for 10.10 and must admit that the good folks at ubuntu will need to go back to the drawing board on this one … maybe it is flash or what – but when listening to grooveshark or youtube the system is virtually unresponsive added to this it annoyingly locks the screen every 5 minutes. The gui app to set this straight is hidden so much that a sudo into /etc seems the only way out … arrgh

Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop works immaculately on my ageing and beloved EEE pc 901, all the local drivers and peripherals so easy. Netbook version seems like Micky Mouse for the kids.
